Family
Values
Recognizing one’s
individual and family values is the first and most important chapter in
the Health & Relationships in the New Millennium curriculum. The
teacher can discuss the role of personal values with the class, encourage
teens to identify their own values and encourage them to explore how their
own values are (most often) a reflection of their family’s values.
Worksheets are provided for the student to work on (Personal Values) and
to take home for a parent/guardian to complete (Family Values). It can
cause both parent and child to feel more secure in their relationship and
strengthen their communication about multiple topics.
The
curriculum builds character and self-esteem through positive
activities.

‘for school’ that I probably wouldn’t have talked to them about
otherwise.” Junior at Redwood Christian High School

Decisions, Communication & Peer Pressures
When a
student is confident in his or her own set of values, decision making and
dealing with peer pressures may not seem so overwhelming. Most decisions
are value based. Having clearly outlined values lends itself well to
establishing clear boundaries. The same is true for communication. When a
young person is familiar with his or her values and boundaries,
communicating them is also easier. The curriculum teaches students to
respect the differences of others and to agree to disagree without
compromising their own personal values. Preparing and equipping teens is
essential, as peer pressures are inevitable. Having firm values,
boundaries and the ability to communicate will provide some of the
foundational tools they will need to succeed.

without caving into the pressure to have sex.”
